It’s almost here! 2 days in one!

Monday I did my normal morning routine, and then headed to the agency to meet up with the ladies. They had some good news for me I have been booked for a job. Saturday I will be helping with a MRT event at the new station. I have also been booked for some fight club thing, although I don’t have the details yet. We also went over my pics from the shoot with Nino. Here is the one they liked the most.

Finally they informed me I would be getting a roommate. A bit of a bummer after a month and a half I have to start sharing a room, but so is life. I will have another buddy is how I look at it, so long as he isn’t some crazy dude or can’t speak English.

I wandered around Chinatown after my stop at the agency and the Lunar New Year is in the air. I found out what the flags mean, they are symbols of a particular clan or church and meant to be worship to descendants. Chinatown is sprinkled with gold and red, melon seeds, oranges and treats. It was amazing to see how active this area of town has become over the past month. I tried these treats that are glutinous rice, coconut milk and chocolate or fruit or red bean. They were not overly sweet, which was good, but too chewy for me.

In the evening I met up with Aska to grab a bite and a beer. Dinner was good, but nothing to write home about so I am not going to. While having a beer we met a couple from Eastern Europe that were just killing time before they long flight home. I was in the bathroom and noticed this sign. Likely a lost in translation but can you spot the error.* see bottom.

Tuesday, was a tough day, it was a 2 a day workout. These are intense and fun, but do they ever leave you exhausted, I spent about 2 hours in the gym, some of it was fight conditioning which was pretty fun. I discovered I am terrible at throwing combinations. In the evening I had made plans to help Blaire at Ikea.

Normally I avoid Ikea at all costs, but adventure adventure adventure. We spent about 2 hours walking around there, getting lost multiple times. What is a trip to Ikea when you don't get lost multple times? After some humming and hawing we found a dresser, desk, chair, and mirror for her. The hardest part was probably fining a suitable chair. I think it certainly would have taken longer if there weren’t two of us there. Upon determining the delivery date of the stuff it was discovered it would be almost 3 weeks if they were to build it for her, so in light of that I offered to build the Ikea stuff for her. It’s like Lego for grown ups, I find it fun. I also don’t feel lazy if I help out with these kinds of things. For all that Blaire and her friends have done for me to feel welcome I have no problem doing this. So Sunday that is my plan.

Both of us were hungry after all that Ikea and we ended up at a Japanese/Korean fusion BBQ restaurant. The food was good here, but what made this episode was that I tried beef tongue. Yum!

I also discovered that I had an invite to Wicked. Those that know me know back home a musical, haha no chance. But yet again open-minded and adventure is how I am treating this trip.

I almost forgot, I found this. The biggest problem with natural peanut butter is the darn oil that sits on the top and having to mix it. Seems that Asia found the solution without adding ingredients.

* Dictionary definition of Alleviate: to make less severe. So if I throw towels into the toilet, it will fix the toilet, why wouldn't I do that then.

Splish splash

Saturday was what I expected to be a very low-key day. I have come to the decision that I am a very lucky guy as things have been popping up for me to experience.  I am so thankful for this opportunity to come to Singapore, for the people I have met and the new things I come across.

I took a walk to the Alexandra hawker centre, enjoyed a Thai dish. I have really been digging Thai since I had the pad Thai last week. Although this time it was a fried Vermicelli Dish. I proceeded to head home and made a last minute decision to pick up some carrots and snow peas. As luck would have it, I came across a kid’s magic show, by D’Amazing Bosco. I couldn’t help but smile and be entertained by this.

Shortly after getting home, one of my new friends from Internations texted me. Mags from Ireland invited me to come check out the Marina Bay Sands water and lights show. I didn’t even know this existed. To be completely honest I just wanted to go to bed. Adventure doesn’t come to those who sit and wait though, so I took Mags and her mate up on the offer and it was incredible.

I had to take off right after the show and caught the last train home. The plan for Sunday was to meet Rafa and play some basketball. The MRT planned things differently though; the MRT didn’t start until 10 on Sunday due to maintanence. I was supposed to meet Rafa at 8:45, so another time.

Picture and brain overload! O and video too!

All Day and All Night ****UPDATED****

Very last minute last night I received a text about a job. I was wrong about fashion show being today, it was an event.  This morning my job was to walk around the Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre and an MRT station to promote overnight service on Saturday. The reason, they are holding the Singapore marathon on Sunday. There are over 70 000 particpants this year doing various distances.

I met up with the organizers around 11, changed into my pajamas and picked up a sign. A counterpart was cast to work with me as well. A probably 18 or 19 year old Ukrainian girl that knew very little English. She was nice, very curious about me and where I am from, although very robotic.

After a few hours of that my day of work was done. Not to bad. Next on my list of tasks for the day was to record a video casting at the agency. I had an extra hour to kill and food to be eaten so I did that before showing up. Maxwell Hawker centre was only a 5 minute walk from the agency so that was my desired food vendor location.  I scoped out some food stands and found one that served Satay Bee Hoon. After some research (on google) I discovered that Bee Hoon is a vermicelli based dish, with a peanut sauce.  Upon my departure I scouted a sign that described some of the local dishes. To my pleasant surprise many are rice flour based. Singapore is getting easier for me every day as I learn.

A quick video and chat with the ladies at the agency and I was on my way home. I was curious about something I saw at Mr. Bean last time so I decided to check it out. 3 in 1 Rice Ball. Made with glutinous rice (basically overcooked rice) and filled in the middle with peanut butter. Hell yeah peanut butter. When I was eating I discovered that the wonderful woman behind the counter gave me 5 instead of the signs indicated 3. Nice!

I relaxed the rest of the afternoon and evening. Tonight will be my first bar experience in Singapore. Lucky for us tall, handsome, white guys, when we bring our comp cards to bars they give you VIP and complimentary food and beverage. Of course being in a foreign city drinking for the first time, I will keep things tame.

I almost forgot about these. The food descriptions:
