I spent much of the day trying to figure out my plans for
the great NYE. In doing so I did my regular gym session, and walked about a
million miles.
One friend had been placed on the guest list for Ku de ta.
The bar at the top of the marina bay sands, another friend had no idea what he
was doing except it was with the ex (lame) and another had invited me to a
potlatch. There was a warning about the potlatch that it would be all
Singaporeans. My thought is always as long as they are fun that cares where
they come from. And luckily everyone
there shared the same belief and was fun.
I found it kind of interesting about potlatch. Smart idea
actually. It was the responsibility of the men to bring alcohol and the women
to bring food. This was great as it ensured that not everyone did one and not
the other. So after my 2nd workout, and shower, I headed to CQ and
met up with Bernie. I find it quite interesting about purchase of alcohol in
Singapore. You want beer or wine you can buy it at 7-11 or the grocery store.
But if your elixir is more of higher spirit shall we say, it can become more
difficult, not to mention about 2x the cost vs. Canada.
After almost finding the house a few times in the cab we
finally pulled up. A number of the guys were watching the Man. United vs
Blackburn game; I really need to start watching soccer. I am going through
sports withdrawal, and soccer is entertaining if I give it a shot. There was a
spread of food out, Bernie brought sushi and grabbed a few pieces of that.
We originally planned on being out for the 12 strikes of the
clock, but decided to celebrate it in then head out. It was great at midnight
we all counted down and shared hugs and champagne. An interesting thing I noted
that is Canada, you give someone a kiss at midnight, not the case here or I
didn’t notice it happening.
One of Bernie’s friends gave us a ride to the bar, along the
way we picked up another friend. The traffic was ridiculous, in what seemed to
be forever we finally made it to our destination. Everyone knew someone there and we were showed
through the door and into the VIP section. My curiosity about other clubs
prompted a detour to Zouk. This is apparently one of the biggest clubs in
Singapore. And on NYE it certainly appeared that way, after meeting someone
getting a stamp, then escorted around the back to a secret door. We hop,
skipped and jumped our way up the stairs to the VIP area overlooking 1 of 3 dance
floors. After touring around for a bit we went and returned back to our
friends.
Off to another bar, we once again had some VIP connections.
The night was getting late at this point but the celebrations were evidentially
continuing. Finally Bernie and I decided to grab some food. It had been 6 hours
since we left the Potlatch and I was pretty hungry. I ordered Beehoon at this
place called spice and actually asked if they could make it spicy (white guy
mistake I might say). Once again it was great to meat more locals. While
sitting we chatted up a group who had just finished a night that rivaled ours
for entertainment.
By this time the sun was on its way up and getting a cab was
nearly impossible. Fortunately, my previous runs and walks I recognized the
area and figured I was about a 45-minute walk from home and started my way
back. Finally at 8:30 am, my head hit the pillow and I had an awesome New Year’s
Eve. I spent almost no money (bonus) and proved that you don’t need to be
drinking lots to have fun.
